Why I’m Not Setting Goals in 2013

2013 themeI’m trying something different this year.  Typically in January I create a list of goals that I want to accomplish but because of lack of focus or maybe my high need for change and variety, they will usually fall away sometime in February.  Does this happen to you?  Whether it’s lack of intentionality or my desire for change I’m not sure.  What I am convinced of is, the reason people fail is always broken focus.  I can trace every failure in my life to a broken focus.  Instead of making a list of goals I asked myself these 3 questions in order to stay focused:

  1. What will make a great 2013 for me?
  2. What kind of person do I want to become this year?
  3. What’s the life I want to live this year?

Thanks to Chris Brogan, I came up with three words that are my theme for 2013

Health

I want to become not just healthier physically but healthier emotionally, spiritually, and mentally.  I’ve set mini-goals around this theme such as:  Running a 5k this month, eating healthier, enrolling in an online course called Platform University.

Stability

For me this is centered around my finances.  I’m working on different streams of income such as a new book (coming out in June 2013), online courses and training DVD’s.  I’m also following Dave Ramsey’s suggestions for creating more security for my family.

Fun

I’ve decided to do projects that are fun!  Life is too short to work with people that you don’t like.  The past month I’ve been getting clearer about learning How To Put My Strengths To Work.  I’m planning on doing more keynotes, workshops and writing.  One break through discovery for me in 2013 has been that I love content creation and delivery so I’m working on a plan to fill most of my time with these activities.

Do you have goals or a theme for 2013?
